As the name suggests, Wok & Wine is a Chinese restaurant that also serves a good selection of wine. If you have coeliac disease you will know that eating out in Chinese restaurants can be a challenge due to the fact that soy sauce appears prominently in many dishes. Wok & Wine provide a separate gluten free menu that includes a good selection of dishes made with gluten free soy sauce and using potato and rice flour instead of wheat flour.

You can find Wok & Wine on 57a Frederick street – it’s just a couple of minutes from Princes street and is downstairs, just down from Rick’s bar.

We went to Wok & Wine at 6pm on a Wednesday night so expected it to be pretty quiet, but there were actually quite a few diners there already. The menu is quite unique for a Chinese restaurant as it includes both main course sized portions and “bite sized” portions. I love this, as it gives you a chance to try a few different dishes without pigging out!

The choice on the menu for gluten free diners is quite impressive. There are a few different soups and over 30 different dishes including beef, chicken, prawns, seafood and a good selection of vegetarian dishes.

We opted for the spicy hot crispy aubergine (bite size), spicy hot king prawns with onion and chilli (bite size) and beef with pak choi, ginger and spring onion. If you want to look at the menu just visit the Wok & Wine website. There is a gluten free menu on there although it seems slightly different from the menu that we got in the restaurant as I didn’t see any spicy chicken dishes on the GF menu in the restaurant.

While waiting for our food we were brought some prawn crackers and a couple of tasty chicken wings with lemon grass (gluten free of course), which was a nice touch. The food arrived quickly and was very fresh and tasted delicious. The aubergine was very tender and the spicy prawns had a great kick to them. The beef was also very succulent and came in a tasty sauce

Here is a photo of our food:

The staff at Wok & Wine are very friendly and they always confirm that the food is gluten free when they bring it to your table. I really like it when people in restaurants do this as it just gives you that extra bit of reassurance that they’ve not forgotten your order is gluten free!

If you are in Edinburgh and fancy a bit of Chinese food, I highly recommend giving Wok & Wine a try, whether you are on a gluten free diet or not. The food is top notch and I’ll definitely be returning there in the near future.

I’d also like to say that I’ve been here twice and never felt unwell, so I am pretty sure that they are preventing any cross contamination from occurring in the kitchen.

I’ve been to this restaurant three times now since being diagnosed with coeliac disease – twice for lunch and once for dinner. Le Monde is situated in George street and is a chic bar with a large restaurant area, both downstairs (Vienna) and upstairs (Paris). It also has a hotel with 18 rooms, although I can’t comment on the hotel, having never stayed there.

I’m pretty sensitive to cross contamination and I’m pleased to report that I’ve never felt ill after any of my trips to Le Monde, so it seems like a pretty safe place to eat.

The menu is quite large, with a variety of dishes from different countries, but unfortunately each time I’ve been there the gluten free choices have been very limited. The serving staff never seem to know what is gluten free and what isn’t, but they always go and check with the chef and come back to let me know what my options are. Some of the dishes are naturally gluten free and they’ll provide the option of taking away part of a dish that isn’t (e.g. removal of the bread, the sauce, the croutons etc)

On my last trip for dinner I had the choice of either paprika prawns (without the crusty bread), french onion soup (without the crouton) or chicken satay (without the satay) for starters. I opted for the paprika prawns and they were nicely cooked and flavoursome, but nothing special. For main courses I had the choice of either pan fried chicken supreme, or a burger (without the bun) or sea bass. I went for the sea bass, which was very simple, but perfectly cooked. The portion of seabass was very generous and came with spinach, new potatoes and a poached egg florentine. My friend had a salmon tart for starters and a tiger prawn & mussel laksa with noodlesfor a main. She enjoyed this, but I didn’t sample it since it wasn’t gluten free.

For dessert I had the choice between either vanilla creme brulee (without the shortbread) or Eton mess. I went for the Eton Mess, which was a little disappointing as the fruits had that taste of frozen fruit – very bitter tasting. My friend went for sticky toffee pudding, which looked lovely – a dessert that I have missed since being on a gluten free diet.

The price of the food is fairly reasonable at around £4.50-7.50 for starters and £7.50-18 for main courses on the a la carte menu at dinner.

Both of the times I visited here for lunch I had a thai style surf and turf salad – this was a really nice salad with beef and prawns with a thai style marinade.

So overall, I feel that Le Monde is a safe place for coeliacs to eat, but check first what is available to you on the menu just in case you don’t fancy any of the gluten free dishes. If you are looking for a restaurant with more choice take a look at some of my other Gluten Free Edinburgh Restaurant Reviews for some other ideas.

I hope you find this gluten free review of Le Monde to be helpful and please feel free to comment below if you have experienced this restaurant as a gluten free diner.

A Room in the Town is just a few minutes walk downhill from the centre of George street at 18 Howe Street and is a great place for a relaxed lunch or dinner.

Here’s a quick review of A Room in the Town from the perspective of a gluten free diner!

The menu in A Room in the Town is printed on paper and seems to change on a regular basis. All you need to do is tell the waiter or waitress that you are on a gluten free diet and they will highlight all the items on the menu that you can safely eat.

Every time I have been to A Room in the Town I’ve been able to have a choice of around 5 starters and 6-7 main courses. Sample starters from one of my recent visits included poached sole fillet & prawns with a sour cream tartare, goats cheese, courgette & piquillo pepper terrine, soup of the night or chilled smoked salmon, cream cheese & caper parcel with petit pois puree. These typically range from £4.25-£5.95 per dish in the evening.

For main courses choices included grilled salmon fillet with roast garlic & sunblushed tomato caponata, slow braised ox cheek with shitake mushrooms, sesame seeds & carrot puree, seared monkfish fillet & sauteed leeks with a crayfish scallion & sweetcorn butter or chargrilled lamb rump with sauteed spring cabbage, chestnuts, butternut squash & a Madeira gravy. Yum! The main courses range from £11.95-£18.95 in the evening and include some lovely potatoes and vegetables on the side. On my last visit I had a perfectly cooked monkfish dish, which was delicious, and overall I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of the food.

For dessert there is always a selection of gluten free ice cream and on occassion they do have gluten free cake as well. I had a lovely lemon cake made from polenta on my last visit.

Another bonus to this restaurant is that you can bring your own bottle. They have a corkage charge of £3 for wine or £4 for bubbly or you can choose wine from their own wine list.

Each time I’ve eaten at A Room in the Town I’ve never had any gluten symptoms, so I can only assume that they are careful in the kitchen with cross contamination. I’m pretty sensitive to cross contamination and have very specific symptoms that I get only from eating gluten, so I usually know if there has been an issue with this.

If A Room in The Town isn’t convenient for you, there are a few other restaurants in Edinburgh owned by the same company. There’s A Room in the West End, A Room in Leith and Teuchters Landing. You can find out more on the A Room in… website. I’ve never been to any of these since starting my gluten free diet, but I have heard that they also offer a good selection of gluten free options.

If you’ve not heard of this resturant before it is inside the Parliment hotel, on Carlton Hill. You can get there very easily if you are in the town centre by just walking up Waterloo place, past the Apex Hotel and Howie’s, then you’ll find a little lane on your left hand side.

In the evenings you’ll find a set menu and an a la carte menu and there also daily specials including starters, main courses and desserts. Although they do not have a seperate gluten free menu, all you need to do is tell the staff that you are on a gluten free diet and they will bring you a copy of the menu marked up with all the gluten free options. Some dishes are naturally gluten free and others can be specially modified by the chefs.

If you are fed up going to resturants that have a poor choice of gluten free food, you will be in heaven here. I was amazed to find that I could have any of the starters apart from one and any main course apart from the pasta dish. Desserts are often a disappointment for people on a gluten free diet as we are often offered ice cream or cheese without the biscuits. Not at MP’s Bistro! I could choose from a chocolate torte, a creme brulee and a couple of other desserts.

At the beginning of the meal we had a few nibbles on the table, which included some little haggis canopies. I love haggis, but as this usually contains gluten it is off limits for me. MP’s Bistro actually has gluten free haggis, so this was a rare treat for me In addition to this I was given some gluten free bread to nibble on, which was a first for me as most resturants to not seem to stock this.

For my starter I had a very tasty chicken and plum roulade served with a cherry tomato and chilli compote. My main course was seabass – one of the specials and was perfectly cooked. I was happy to learn that all the side dishes (including the chips!) were also gluten free. Often restaurants coat their chips in wheat or fry them in a fryer that is also used to fry food with breadcrumbs or batter on it, so it was really nice to be able to indulge in a few chips!

By this point I was stuffed, but the desserts looked fabulous so all of us decided to share a dessert. I had the chocolate terrine with fresh mint cream, which was delicious and enough for two people.

Over all I had a fantastic meal at MP’s Bistro and would highly recommend it to anyone who is on a gluten free diet. The price is very reasonable and there is a nice atmosphere to the place. Most importantly I wasn’t glutened! You can see a map of the location below.
As I recover and begin to feel more and more normal I intend to change that and at the same time write as many gluten free restaurant reviews as possible.

One restuarant in Edinburgh that I’ve visited a few times is Cafe Andaluz in Edinburgh. This is a Spanish Tapas bar and has a large menu with lots of gluten free items on it. To make it really simple they mark gluten free items with “GF”. It’s common to feel a little deprived while dining out on a gluten free diet as often you’ll find a huge menu whittled down to just a few items that are gluten free, but at Cafe Andaluz there are a LOT of choices, so the only problem you’ll have is deciding what to choose from the wide selection.

Good Gluten Free Selection on the Menu

A few items that I’ve tried over the last few months and really enjoyed are:

Patatas bravas (spicy potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce & alioli)

Ensalada Marroqui (roasted sweet potato, parsnip and chickpea salad)

Carne de Res Picante (delicious spicy beef with manchego cheese and chorizo dressing on a bed of rocket)

Gambas Pil Pil (hot peeled prawns with olive oil, chillies and garlic)

Vieiras Con Serrano (scallops with basil creamed leeks and Serrano Ham)

Lubina con Salsa de Mango (grilled fillet of seabass with a mango and sweet pepper salsa)

Other gluten free dishes include mussels in a cream and white wine sauce, serrano ham with chorizo and manchego cheese, chicken breast with paprika and yoghurt, chorizo in a red wine sauce, paella and a few more.

As you can see you won’t feel deprived from this list!

If you have not been to a tapas bar before, the idea is simply to choose a few dishes per person and share them. The dishes are typically the same size as a starter and you’d probably share between 5 & 8 dishes between two people depending on how hungry you are.

Most of the tapas range in price from £4-7 and you can also get a special price for 3 tapas dishes and a dessert.

The ambiance of Cafe Andaluz is very pleasant – tiled walls and floors, colourful cushions, laterns and traditional Spanish pottery on the walls. It can be pretty busy at peak times so be sure to book in advance if you are going there.

I’ve been there at least 5 times over the last few months and never felt ill, so I can only assume that they are very careful in the kitchen with cross contamination.

If I had to pick any negative points, the main ones would be:

No “GF” marked on the desserts menu (although the creme brulee and the merangue desserts are gluten free)

Some of the staff have problems understanding English – twice I’ve been offered bread just a minute after telling the waiter or waitress that I am on a gluten free diet! If it wasn’t for the GF symbols on the menu I would have felt very uncomfortable about this.

Tapas brought all at once – in a traditional tapas bar the dishes are brought to you as they are ready, whereas in Cafe Andaluz they are brought all at once (often when there is not enough room on the table).

Despite these points I’ve always had a very enjoyable gluten free meal at Cafe Andaluz and I’d recommend it to anyone who is on a Gluten Free diet.

If you live in Glasgow, there is also a Cafe Andaluz in Glasgow city centre.
